NEWS SERVICE -- 1/29/87 USE CHEMICALS WITH CARE University Park, Pa. -- Chemicals are indispensable products in the agricultural community, but with improper use they can cause serious injury and damage the environment. Penn State's Cooperative Extension Service reminds farmers to use extra caution when handling and applying chemicals. --Always read and follow manufacturers' instructions for storage and application. Instruct all workers in proper use of chemicals. --Use only the recommended amount--more is not better. Excessive dosage could contaminate milk or meat, result in residue on crops or increase the chance of water pollution from runoff. --Select the right chemical for the job. If you have a choice, select the one that is least toxic or polluting. --Wear personal protective equipment--gloves, respirator, eye protection--as recommended by the manufacturer. --Keep chemicals locked up and out of children's reach. Do not allow children to play in areas where chemicals are used. --Store chemicals in their original containers and dispose of empty containers properly.
