TYPES OF EXTINGUISHERS
South Carolina Extension Publications TYPES OF EXTINGUISHERS

JACK W. DAVIS EXTENSION SAFETY SPECIALIST

Fire extinguishers are marked according to the classes of fire they put out. A standard marking system has been established to make identification simple. Labels on extinguishers show the class of fire and the size of fire the extinguisher can be expected to handle when properly used. The labeling system involves a number and an alphabetic letter. The number indicates approximate extinguishing potential. The letter indicates the class of fire it can extinguish.

Extinguishers that will work on solid fuel fires are marked with an "A" in a triangle. Those that are effective on liquid fires are marked with a "B" in a square. Those that may be used safely on electrical fires are marked with a "C" in a circle.

For most home use, consider a multipurpose dry chemical extinguisher. An extinguisher that can be used for more than one class of fire will be rated for each class of fire on the label. For example, an extinguisher rated 2A:10BC means that it will extinguish all three classes of fires if used properly. The lowest rating given to Class A extinguishers is 1A. This would be good only on a very small solid fuel fire. A 2A rating will be twice as effective as a 1A rating, and a 4A rating will give four times the protection, and so on. Select an extinguisher with at least a 2A rating for your home.

Class B fire extinguishers are rated according to the square feet of flammable liquid they will extinguish if used properly. The lowest rating given to a Class B extinguisher is 5B. A 5B unit should extinguish five square feet of flammable liquid, and a 10B would control ten square feet if used properly.

Class C extinguishers are not given a numeric rating because most Class C, electrical fires, will involve either Class A or B materials. The C rating will appear if it is safe to use on electrical fires.
