SAFETY FOR THE YOUNG--BURNS

Each year many children are burned because they are curious, inexperienced and careless. Sometimes parents get tired and that leads to carelessness and inattentiveness. Any of the three of these things can lead to a child getting burned.

Burns are caused by more than flames and hot things. Chemicals and electrical apparatus also can cause burns. Cleaning fluids, that are strong chemicals, should be stored high enough so that children cannot reach them or kept in locked cupboards. Parents should child-proof their house against crawling children who will have a penchant for chewing on things such as extension cords. Babies may also try to stick fingers and things like hairpins into electrical plugs. An inexpensive, almost child proof, electrical outlet insert is available to prevent this type of burn accident.

The mild heat that is felt by a child touching Christmas tree lights usually is enough to prevent that type of burn, but scalds are another matter. Burns resulting from children pulling a pan of boiling liquid or a skilletful of grease from a range top onto themselves is seen too frequently in hospital emergency rooms. In Sweden, parents automatically install a guardrail about four inches high on the kitchen stove when the first child is born. This rail stays in place to prevent children from scalding themselves by pulling or spilling pans until the family's youngest child is 12. The device is inconvenient because you must must cook in a sort of box with the pan handles pointed into the center, but it does prevent scalding accidents.--Jerry Reyburn Source: Jerry Reyburn
