RESPECT POWER-TAKE-OFF MACHINERY

University Park, PA -- The power-take-off (PTO) allows farmers to harness the power of a tractor engine to drive other farm machinery, but this power must be used carefully, warns Dennis Murphy, Penn State farm safety specialist.

PTO drivelines are extremely powerful and can cause serious and even fatal injuries. Murphy offers the following guidelines to help farm workers prevent a needless tragedy:

• Keep all PTO shielding, including the master shield, in place when the machine is operating. Repair or replace any damaged or missing shields.
• Stay a safe distance away from unshielded moving parts. Keep children and non-workers out of the area.
• Wear well-fitted work clothing -- loose clothes can get caught in moving machinery parts. Remove all jewelry.
• Turn off the PTO when dismounting the machinery to attend to operating problems.

Accidents can happen in a split second, so it is wise to know first-aid, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit on hand, and make sure workers are trained in first-aid procedures. Have emergency telephone numbers posted by all telephones.
