NEWS SERVICE -- 8/14/87 FALLS, THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION Falls are a major cause of injury around the home and all ages are susceptible. The 4-H safety program, reminds youth of some basic rules to prevent falls. One is that you cannot repeal the law of gravity. All that goes up will come down and the force of impact will be determined by rules of weight and distance of fall. How hard you hit depends on how big you are and the distance dropped. If you get lucky and land on your feet instead of your head, you might not be hurt so badly. Four-H'ers learn in the safety program to keep stairways clean and clear of clutter. Lighting these areas also prevents falls. Ladders and other climbing devices must be set on flat, solid surfaces. When painting, tall ladders should be anchored to prevent slipping. Throw rugs are dangerous to older folks and can cause falls. All clutter is to be avoided. That can include sleeping family pets. Part of fall prevention is being aware of the probable areas and activities likely to cause falls and taking the necessary precautions. Four-H is trying to help.
