News Service -- 5/6/87 -- Radio Rewrite EXTRA RIDERS TAKE SERIOUS RISK Farming is one of the most hazardous occupations, but there are ways to keep tragedies to a minimum. For example, workers should not give anyone a ride on heavy machinery when they are trying to get a job done. Every year people fall from moving equipment and are crushed. In 1985 alone runovers accounted for one out of every four farm tractor fatalities. Neither children or non-working adults should be allowed to jump up and grab a ride, not even in the cab. First because the passenger is not protected by a safety belt and second the driver may get distracted. If you have field workers that need a lift, provide transportation in cars or trucks rather than allowing them to ride as extras on machinery....you'll all be safer. A tractor, combine or other self-propelled machine is also not a suitable place to babysit. When there is field work to be done, arrange for child care away from work areas. Now here is a suggestion you may find hard to follow. Remove the keys from farm equipment when you park it and lock the cab! You're probably thinking I've never locked it up before, and living way out here, who would bother things? Well you never know. But if you remove the keys from the ignition when you are not working, you will never find the equipment started up unexpectedly.
