EXTRA RIDERS TAKE SERIOUS RISK Part II

University Park, PA -- "No riders allowed" should be the strict rule on all farm equipment to prevent tragic deaths and injuries, says Penn State farm safety specialist Dennis Murphy.

Some of the saddest of all farm accidents involve adults and children who fall from moving equipment and are crushed. In 1985, runovers accounted for about one out of every four farm tractor fatalities.

Murphy urges all farm workers and residents to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Keep children, as well as non-working adults, off of and away from farm equipment -- don't give in to requests for a ride. Cabs are not a safe place for passengers, either, because they are not protected by safety belts and may distract the driver.
  • A tractor, combine or other self-propelled machine is not a suitable place to babysit. Arrange for child care away from work areas.
  • Remove keys from farm equipment when you park it, and lock the cab. Remove the keys from the ignition if you are working on the equipment -- you would not want the machine started unexpectedly.
  • Provide safe transportation for workers in cars or trucks rather than allow them to ride as extras on machinery.
