LIQUID COATING APPLICATION
A SAFETY TALK FOR DISCUSSION LEADERS
This safety talk is designed for discussion leaders to use in
preparing safety meetings.
TIPS FOR LEADING THE DISCUSSION:
Set a specific time and date for your safety meeting. Publicize
your meeting so everyone involved will be sure to attend.
Review this safety talk before the meeting and become familiar
with its content. Make notes about the points made in this talk
that pertain to your workplace. You should be able to present the
material in your own words and lead the discussion without
reading it.
Seating space is not absolutely necessary, but arrangements
should be made so that those attending can easily see and hear
the presentation.
Collect whatever materials and props you will need ahead of time.
Try to use equipment in your workplace to demonstrate your
points.
DURING THE MEETING:
Give the safety talk in your own words. Use the printed talk
merely as a guide.
The purpose of a safety meeting is to initiate discussion of
safety problems and provide solutions to those problems.
Encourage employees to discuss hazards or potential hazards the
encounter on the job. Ask them to suggest ways to improve safety
in their area.
Don't let the meeting turn into a gripe session about unrelated
topics. As discussion leader, its your job to make sure the topic
is safety. Discussing other topics wastes time and can ruin the
effectiveness of your safety meeting.
At the end of the meeting, ask employees to sign a sheet on the
back of this talk as a record that they attended the safety
meeting. Keep this talk on file for your records.
LIQUID COATING APPLICATION
You, as an employee, may be called upon to apply liquid coatings
of various materials to floors and wall. On the outside, you
would have no problem except possibly getting materials on your
hands and arms.
On the inside however, your work might be in a constricted area
and the vapor concentration could become dangerous.
There could be two different types of health hazards involved:
The inhalation of the solvent vapors may result in stupor,
dizziness, headache, nausea and breaking out of the skin. Smoking
increases this effect. Besides, it may cause an explosion. Do not
smoke.
Contact with liquid coating may cause serious skin irritations.
Proper ventilation is essential. Usually a fan (explosion-proof
motor if exhausting), or an air mover powered by compressed air,
is propelled. Use it. When using this ventilation be careful not
to blow vapors on other employees.
Always use a chemical cartridge respirator for organic vapors.
See that it fit properly. If you smell vapor, change the
cartridge.
In addition, wear the proper protective clothing.
Employees working in the same room with you should have the same
type of protection that you have.
For your safety:
ù Make sure you have paper towels or clean cloth towels in the
area.
Never use kerosene or other solvents for personal washing or
cleaning purposes.
ù Apply protective skin coatings before exposure and protective
kin creams after 0 exposure.
ù Always wear clean work clothes.
ù Keep containers sealed.
ù Don't smoke.
Note to Discussion Leader:
If there have been accident relating to the application of liquid
coatings in your area, be prepared to discuss them with employee.
Also, mention any hazards that are unique to your operation.
