Commonly Used Acronyms in OSHA


ACGIH
American Conference of Governmental Hygienist, organization is noted for setting new threshold limit values for chemicals.

AD
Area Director, OSHA manager that runs an area office.

ALJ
Administrative Law Judge, first person that will usually hear and decide on a contested OSHA citation.

ANSI
American National Standards Institute, a standards setting organization comprised of industry, govenmental, trade, insurance and other professional organizations.

ASME
American Society of Mechanical Engineers

AVD
Alleged Violation Description, the written portion of the citation that describes the condition found on the inspection.

BLS
Bureau of Labor Statistics, monitors injury/illness data from various occupations. The blue OSHA text regarding guidelines to recordkeeping was done by them.

CACOSH
Construction Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health, meets to discuss the impact of proposed construction standards.

CFR
Code of Federal Regulations, Section 29 has the OSHA regulations.

CPL
Compliance, compliance directives begin with the acronym CPL.

CSHO
Compliance Safety and Health Officer, the people who conduct an OSHA inspection. Pronounced "co-show."

DOL
Department of Labor, OSHA is a branch of the Labor Department. These include agencies such as Employment Standards Administration, Employment Training Administration, Mine Safety and Health Administration.

FOM
Field Operations Manual, the answer book for OSHA inspection procedures, citation write-up, and penalty calculations.

FTS
Federal Telephone System, the US government's own phone system.

IDLH
Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health

IH
Industrial Hygienist, primarily conducts health inspections although most inspections are in industrial settings.

LEL
Lower Explosive Limit

LWDI
Lost Work Day Injury rate, used to determine comprehensiveness of industrial inpections.

MSDS
Material Safety Data Sheet, a sheet with summary information regarding individual chemicals.

NIOSH
National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, funded by OSHA to perform research on topics of safety and health.

OSHA
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, pronounced "o-sha."

OTI
OSHA Training Institute, located in Des Plaines, Main training source for OSHA training.

PEL
Permissible Exposure Limit

PPE
Personal Protective Equipment

PPM
Parts per Million

RA
Regional Administrator, there are 10 regional administrators in OSHA.

SIC
Standard Industrial Classification, Bureau of Labor Statistics has defined several occupations and catergorized them by a four digit code. Construction codes range from 1500-1799.

STD
Standards, in the directive system, formal interpretations of an OSHA regulation are preceded with an "STD."
